There’s an expression that everyone knows, ‘falling in love’. We’ve all heard it, but there’s nothing comparable to essentially feeling it. We all can make assumptions, theories, and, dare I even say it, wishful fantasies. I’ve dreamt about her, longed for her, and I had no idea, no notion she would be truly the one. Yeah, lust may have driven me here, but the moment I held out that savory piece of steak for her to take that succulent bite, she released all the uncertainties and leaned in and took it, I knew. I knew in that precise heartbeat she’s mine.

In that instant, which was the most intimate moment I’ve ever had, and incredibly, I still had my clothes on. What kind of girl does this to a veteran of the sport? A simple smile, a fraction of a glance, echoing, haunting ghosts of her in the hub of the night grace me habitually, disarmingly every nightfall. Who or what can deliver this kind of influence? She’s it, the one I want to spend the rest of my eternity with. I want to wake up every day with her lying beside me, breathing next to me, and be the first thing I see every morning. And the last thing I hear before falling asleep and listen to the slow rhythmic beating of her heart next to mine.

Now, my question becomes real, how do I make her realize I’m the one for her? I study her standoffish posture, the way she stiffly hands me the plate of food. I switch hands, stunned at how hot it still is. “Thanks so much for helping out… I hope I didn’t traumatize you too badly with my singing,” she says, practically shooing me away and walks me out to my car. And just like that, the heated romance between us loses its luster.

The Styrofoam plate seems hotter than the food, and I switch hands again. The whole situation doesn’t make any sense to me. I saw the warm look in her eyes as our thoughts mingled together with what if? Possibilities arose in her mind just as they did in mine, and then without a word, it all shattered away. Before I leave, I reassure her and point out that there’s nothing that turned me off about her.

I get behind the wheel and drive, and once I hit the first clear intersection, I stop. I unwrap the scorching food and take a bite. It practically burns the taste buds right off my tongue. I raise the plastic fork up and literally watch the steam rise off the chunk of sirloin I just cut. How is that even possible? The food’s been off the grill for at least fifteen minutes or so, and it’s hotter than hell. I close my eyes and wolf down the entire dinner while I’m sitting at the stoplight.
